Aurora Borialis

The Northern (and Southern) Lights

The Aurora Borialis is a phenominon linked to the Earths Magnetic Field. If the following explination is correct. The Borealis ( both the Aurora and the Australis) are thought to be created by 'solar winds' a mass of particles emitted mainly by the Sun. These are highly energetic particles or plasma that are traveling at high spead and are constantly coliding with the Earths magnetic field and are deflected. Many of the deflected particles then follow the curviture of the Earth where they form consentrations at the magnetic poles where they collide with the Earths magnetic flux and create a light display likened to a night time rainbow. It is undeniable that the displays are spectacular, consisting of of varied colours of light. If then the magnetic poles vary there possitionn (as they are doing) the Aurora will also shift.
In 'The Chip Shop' there are several new magnetic poles begining to appear (for the reasons explained in the Earths Magnetic Field) and so mor instances of Aurora begin to form. This is why Danl can see the Aurora ( in the first chapter) from Yorkshire. Further instances of the Aurora Borialis are included in the gallery..
